Many people view retirement and financial planning as two different animals but the reality is they are both part of the same financial beast. In either case, if they are not treated properly by the time retirement age comes around, many folks will have to keep working just to make ends meet or be eaten alive by debt. Many older Americans, unfortunately did not start early enough saving for retirement, if at all and instead of looking at retirement and financial planning they were counting on retirement benefits from their job and Social Security benefits to see them through.

Many baby boomers, born during the recovery of the Great Depression refused to live in the squalor many of their parents described and with jobs bountiful and increases in wages, decided to live their life to the fullest. Very few thought about retirement and financial planning and are watching retirement come straight at them. Even knowing they may not be financially stable enough to retire at 65, they continue to play chicken with retirement racing straight at them.

With retirement and financial planning families can still have money for college as well as vacations while making sure they have money left at the end of the day to pass on to their heirs. With constantly rising costs of nearly everything increasing potential expenses upon retirement, it is never too late to put money aside for when the paychecks stop arriving.

Trying To Decide How Much Is Enough

For years, one million dollars was the target for a retirement fund and while that is a nice piece of change, depending on the lifestyle for the past few years, it may not be enough to support the family in the style in which they have been accustomed. Today’s dollar does not buy as much as it did even 10 years ago and most likely will buy even less in the next 10 or 20 years. With retirement and financial planning in place it may be possible to increase the size of the nest egg and live longer on more.

Many closing in on retirement use retirement calculators to determine how much they will need to live on, but with a couple of variables involved, finding an exact number is nothing more than a guess. Even with the best retirement and financial planning guidance, how much expenses will increase on an annual basis after retirement is impossible to calculate and how many years the money has to be available to the retiree will not be known until it is too late.

Doesn’t it just figure? You finally get to retirement, having earned that peaceful respite after a long life of working. However, you start to develop sleep issues which hinder your ability to get a good night’s rest. If you have a problem getting to sleep or staying that way, chances are that you are not getting the rest you need to feel rejuvenated. There are some things you can try however, to re-capture that time with the Sandman:

1. Stick to a schedule – Always stick to the same schedule whether it is a weekend or a holiday. By going to bed at the same time every night, you are getting your circadian rhythm in sync with your lifestyle. Also, by making sure that you are getting some sunshine or natural light in your daily afternoon rituals, this can better tell your body what time of day it is.

2. Nix the napping – Try to not take a nap in the middle of the day. This can upset your entire circadian rhythm, which is your inner clock that tells you when to sleep. If you sleep in the middle of the day, you are retraining your body to not sleep at night.

3. Exercise on schedule – Exercise is good for your health and body. However, be sure that if you exercise in the evening that you do so at least several hours before bedtime. This will give your body a chance to decompress.

4. Diet issues – What time you eat and drink as well as what you eat and drink can wreak havoc on your night life. First of all, do not consume alcohol or caffeine late in the day as it could keep you up at bedtime. In addition, try and eat dinner a few hours before bed so that indigestion or heartburn does not wake you. You can however, indulge in warm milk or decaffeinated chamomile tea which can lull you to sleep.

5. Create a relaxing bedroom space – Practice good feng shui and create a pleasing, calming space conducive to sleep. Keep your bedroom dark and cool. If you are sensitive to light, choose an alarm clock with a dimmer switch. Make sure that sleep is the only thing that happens in that room. Relocate your computer, desk and exercise equipment in another room.

6. Take a warm bath or shower – A warm bath or shower will cause your body to take time to cool off when you are in bed. For many people, the warm bath or shower is relaxing and the cooling process your body goes through creates drowsiness.

7. Get help from a doctor – If you have tried everything possible and you still cannot get to sleep, visit with your doctor about treatments.

Sleep is essential for life. If you cannot get enough rest and sleep, your health could be come impaired and you are also more susceptible to injury. Seek help for your sleep problems and hopefully soon you can be having sweet dreams.

Everyone deals with pain at some point or another. It could be the pain of childbirth or the pain you get when you get a cavity in a tooth. Breaking a leg, suffering from cancer, having a headache … all are forms of pain. And of course, pain also clouds many other areas of your life such as creating sleeping difficulties, fatigue, depression, irritability, work problems and loss of physical and social pleasure.

Talking with your doctor is the best way to learn how you can control the pain you are experiencing. Medications can work as well as meditation and other activities to help you gain the upper hand and control your pain.

There are a number of ways including medication as listed above that can help you. You just have to decide for yourself, along with the support of your doctor, what would work best for your lifestyle and level of pain. And speaking of pain level, knowing where you stand on a particular tolerance level can help your doctor come up with a pain management plan that would be best for you. For the most part, a doctor uses a scale from zero to ten. Zero means that there is no pain at all and ten is pain at its worst.

Prescribed Medication for Pain

There are all sorts of medications that are used to deal with pain. Some drugs are safe and effective when monitored and taken as prescribed. However, some people hesitate to accept pain medication for fear that they will become addicted. Yes, some pain medications can cause an addiction; however this usually occurs when you take it improperly such as crushing and snorting it or over-medicating yourself.

Other Forms of Pain Management

Sometimes, pain can bring a whole host of other problems such as anxiety, depression, nervousness and fear. These things can lower your threshold to pain. However, by adopting some activities such as exercise, you can reduce your stress levels and increase your tolerance to pain. Here are a few other examples that may help:

1. Join a support group. Knowing that other people are in the same boat means you are not alone.
2. Practice meditation and other relaxation techniques like deep breathing and yoga.
3. Counseling and even hypnosis can help you deal with the pain as well.
4. Massage, acupuncture and chiropractic care may be beneficial as well in dealing with pain.
5. Herbal remedies may help or at least calm the severity of your pain.
6. Imagery and aromatherapy are other alternatives which might distract you from pain.

Of course, when embarking on an alternative form of pain management, you should work with your doctor to ensure that it is safe for you. How long you have had the pain, when it started and where it hurts are all part of creating an effective pain management plan. The most important thing you can do is be proactive in your pain management efforts. Only when you take charge instead of being a passive participant can you find any true relief.

Retirement Planning

Retirement planning is the thought and commitment that you put into providing for income and a comfortable lifestyle for the years after you leave the workforce, and it is one of the most important times in anyone’s life. Waiting until retirement actually approaches in your life is going to be too late to get yourself prepared and ready, and so the earlier you can start the better, even if it is as early as your teenage years, although some consider that to be silly.

The earlier you start the better you are going to be able to plan, and the more money you are going to be able to put away. Even if all this money does not come from your place of employment, for instance if you put a few dollars of your own money away here and there on the side, it will really end up adding up in the end and will help you out tremendously once the day of retirement finally does come.

Career Planning Retirement

Career planning retirement basically refers to the process in which you decide on a career that is going to offer you satisfactory retirement benefits. Really, career planning is an ongoing lifelong process that allows you to change your career direction as circumstances in your life change, retirement or otherwise.

Whether you are just beginning to think about the type of career that you want, you have lost your job due to downsizing or restructuring, or you are considering leaving your present job for another, career planning is often an important aspect in everyone’s life.

Factors That are Involved

There are quite a few different factors that need to be involved and taken into consideration here. First it is important to know yourself, and this means taking the time to assess your own values, interests, skills, accomplishments, and personality, so that you can really be sure of what you like to do in life and what you would enjoy doing as a career.

Career planning retirement is another major issue, because even though you may really love a particular job, if it does not offer adequate retirement benefits then you may want to reconsider. Even though there are other sources that you can be provided with retirement income from, the most reliable means is always through your employment, and you really want to be assured that you are going to be secure and be able to live comfortably once the day of retirement finally comes.

When you sit down with a financial advisor, you will first be given a retirement planning questionnaire. This retirement planning questionnaire will determine how good you are at putting money away. It will examine your spending habits, what your spend your money on and it will determine how much you have to put aside each month. Once you get done with the financial planning questionnaire, your financial advisor will then be prepared to design a plan for you so that you can finally plan for retirement. This plan will ensure you have money put away to enjoy yourself once you actually do retire, which is the main point of visiting a financial advisor in the first place.

Spending Habits

The retirement planning questionnaire will first determine your spending habits. You might be asked questions such as, “How many days a week do you eat out at restaurants?” Or, “How many days a week do you go shopping for things other than food?” These questions are designed to see how well you save your money. If you have a hundred dollars left over from your paycheck each month and you’re constantly eating out, you may need to cut back your lifestyle a little bit so that you can actually put money away. This part of the retirement planning questionnaire will enable the advisor to see what kind of lifestyle you lead.

Saving Habits

The retirement planning questionnaire will also determine how good you are at saving. It might ask you how much money you save each month, or what percent of your paycheck you plan to save now that you are actually planning for retirement. If you don’t save any money, the questionnaire will determine that fact and the advisor can plan accordingly. Make sure you answer honestly or else this exercise will won’t do much good.

Designing A Plan

The financial advisor will tally up the results of your financial planning questionnaire and will then design a plan just for you. This plan will include tailoring your lifestyle around saving, it will tell you how much you should put away each month and it will show you how much you can potentially save if you stick to the plan. By seeing what results you could have, you can often be motivated to stick with it. It’s hard at first but as you get used to it, the money will begin piling up. That’s when it will all seem worthwhile and that’s why many advisors swear by the retirement planning questionnaire when it comes to designing a plan just for you.

People in the military usually have a much different retirement plan than ordinary civilians so they should use a special military retirement calculator when planning for an ideal retirement. Military retirement calculators should provide information that will help each person make important decisions. Usually military people are eligible for retirement earlier than civilians. This means that they might have to save more money faster to have a great retirement or plan to find another job after their retirement from the military. People in the military should consider these factors when working with a military retirement calculator to make their plans for the future.

A military retirement calculator is usually available from the credit unions and banks that provide service to military people while on active duty. These institutions usually continue service to these people after they leave active duty as well. The military personnel planning for retirement should contact these credit unions or other financial institutions to access a military retirement calculator. The institutions that specialize in service to people in the military are usually keenly aware of the special circumstances of their clients. When military people start to plan for retirement, a military retirement calculator should make some important calculations that will make for the most perfect plans.

A Military Retirement Calculator Will Provide Important Figures

People in the military usually live very unusual lives, and these people also have many unusual benefits. Their plans for retirement will be affected by their unusual lives in some ways. Many people in the military move around during their careers so they do not always have a place that feels like a permanent home. After retirement, military people will have to make decisions about their permanent residence. They might want to consider proximity to a large military facility where they might do their shopping to save extra money. Military bases might provide them extra savings on car repair and gardening as well as groceries. These factors might be considered when using a military retirement calculator.

A military retirement calculator can be a great tool, but it is only as good as the figures entered for calculations. Each person using one of these great devices should make sure that they get their facts and figures straight before using a military retirement calculator. A calculator will not know that you are eligible for certain benefits based on military service. The calculator can handle different sets of circumstances depending on the facts provided. The calculator will not figure out that you want a beachfront cottage which might be more expensive, but a savvy person will find out the figures for this type of residence to use when making calculations.

You cannot reverse the signs of aging but you can certainly make the process more comfortable. When you know what to expect, you can take steps in advance in preparation of it. Growing old is more than just wrinkles and gray hair. There are a few more aches and pains to go along with them!

The oldest documented living person was 122 years old. That is quite a life expectancy! Many people are living longer thanks to better health, medications and living conditions. At the turn of the century, the average life expectancy was around 55 years of age. My, how society has improved … with age of course!

You should expect that your body is going to show those signs of aging. However, you don’t have to take them lying down. You can take as many preventative measures as possible to greatly slow the process. Many older adults are successful. The key to success is a realistic view of old age, a healthy diet and of course, safe exercise for endurance, flexibility, strength and weight.

Brain power

Many older adults worry most about losing their minds to Alzheimer’s or dementia. As long as you eat healthy, exercise and challenge your brain frequently, you should be able to avoid this problem. Keep in mind that some forgetfulness is natural though!

The thinning process

As you age, there are quite a few things on and in your body that tend to thin. Your hair gets thinner as well as your skin. You lose a bit of elasticity as a result. Repeated sun block and moisturizers help a lot.

Your retina thins out affecting vision and your auditory canal thins affecting your hearing. Some blood vessels like capillaries thin, which along with thinner skin, makes you more prone to bruising.

Slowing down

Many body processes start to slow down. You digestion slows which may be the reason why you get heartburn or indigestion. In addition, your metabolism slows which means gaining weight, unless you keep up with exercise to burn calories.

Your joints, muscles and bones contribute to the slowing down process. Bones become less dense and weaker while your joints get stiffer and your muscles weaker. This slows down reflexes. Only through exercise can you greatly slow down this slow body downturn.

Other body issues

Some older adults may experience incontinence because bladder muscles weaken. Sex may be a problem thanks to menopause or erectile dysfunction. Sleep becomes disrupted and you may not get as much as you need to rejuvenate your body and mind. Heart, kidneys and bladder also work less efficiently so you have to compensate with better diet and exercise.

All in all, growing older seems like a raw deal all around. However, that is far from the truth. Many older adults have a great time in retirement and love being older and wiser. A lifetime a good habits will buy you a better lifestyle in retirement. Just remember that it is never too late to adopt healthier habits like a better diet and exercise.

Nobody wants to work forever. Most people plan to retire at some point in their lives, usually around fifty or so. Planning for retirement is something that should be done way ahead of that point, however, and there’s no better time to start than the present. If you don’t know how to plan for this time, there is help available. You can go visit a financial planner, you can talk to your employer about your 401K if it’s available, and you can even go out and buy some financial planning software if you want to go it alone. Planning for retirement can be fun, and it should be. After all, this is the time you are supposed to lay back and relax after years of hard work and looking forward to that time can be the motivation most of us need to get started with our planning.

Pay Yourself

One of the best ways you can go about planning for retirement is to pay yourself whenever you get paid. That means that if you get paid biweekly, you should set a little aside from each paycheck just as if you were a bill. Just like you pay your car note, your electricity company and any other bill payments each month, if you treat your own savings like you’re paying a bill, you won’t miss a payment and that money will quickly add up. You should plan to set aside at least ten percent of your paycheck and a little more if you’re able. The more you save, the more you’ll have when it comes time to retire and you’ll be much happier because you actually did save.

Financial Planners

If you don’t know how to save, or don’t think you have the time, visit a financial planner. A financial planner is an expert at planning for retirement. He or she will look at your current income, minus your current bills and will plan a savings plan you can actually stick with. They will also look into things such as mutual funds and other low risk investment opportunities to help you save even more. Sure, you’ll have to pay a financial planner but it’s better than not having any money at all when it actually does come time to retire.

One of the best things you can do is buy one of the money management programs for your computer. These programs will allow you to see just where your money goes and how much you actually have to save. These programs make planning for retirement very easy. And again, there’s no better time to start than right now. Even if you haven’t saved a dime until now, if you start today there’s a good chance you’ll have just enough to enjoy yourself when it comes time to exit the working world after many years of dedication and hard work.

It all boils down to preventative maintenance in order to enjoy a long, healthy retirement. Being proactive about your health includes regular health screenings for cancer, high blood pressure and cholesterol. Your lifestyle such as diet, exercise and sleep habits also play a huge part in staying healthy.

So what exactly do you need to do in order to maintain your health and enjoy life to the fullest? Let’s find out:

Lifestyle Choices

Take a look at your lifestyle and see where you can improve. A proper diet is essential and getting the proper vitamin and minerals can go a long way towards preventing illness and disease. If you haven’t already, keep your salt and fat intake to a minimum. Eating plenty of dark leafy vegetables, fibrous fruits, low fat dairy, lean meats and fish and whole grains will definitely go a long way in maintaining a healthy body.

Exercise is essential. If you are overweight, you need to adopt a healthier diet and incorporate exercise such as walking, a great cardiovascular activity. Yoga, Pilates and strength training are definite body boosters. If your budget allows, consult with a personal trainer or get a gym membership as an incentive to stay fit. Join a walking club or exercise class.

Drinking in moderation and abstaining from tobacco products is a definite health positive. Smoking is linked not only to cancer but also to high blood pressure and a number of other health risks.

Regular Dental and Health Check-Ups

Poor dental health leads to a number of health risks, so be sure to schedule regular maintenance check-ups for teeth cleaning and yearly x-rays. Fillings, bridge work and other dental devices should be regularly maintained as well. Gum disease and tooth decay are major contributors and indicators of something more serious.

Keep up to date on vaccinations and flu shots. Many seniors die every year from the flu because they did not get the flu shot. By becoming vaccinated, you can greatly build your resistance against this debilitating illness. Also, keep in mind that tetanus and diphtheria vaccinations should occur every ten years. In certain areas, you may also need the hepatitis vaccine as well. Make sure that you stay up to date on these inoculations.

Yearly physicals are also essential. At these check-ups you will want to inquire about the preventative screening for cancer. In addition, there are blood tests to determine diabetes, anemia, cholesterol and more. In order to stay healthy, these screening should be done as a preventative measure. If you catch an illness early, there is a greater chance of overcoming it. Don’t neglect your eyes either. Some illnesses have been caught early and cured due to regular eye exams.

Don’t be afraid to seek counseling with various experts in case you have any non-life threatening health issues like impotence, depression or menopause. Sometimes, you just need a helpful push in the right direction with guidance from a nutritionist, personal trainer or even a homeopathic physician. By being proactive in your health, you can ensure that your retirement years are truly golden.
